Key Stage 4 ICT

In year 11 pupils may choose ICT as an option. ICT is a very popular subject and 2005-2006 saw two classes of GCSE for the first time. Pupils study the CEA GCSE ICT full course and are timetabled for six lessons a week. Throughout the course pupils are examined on a range of practical coursework components. At the end of year 12 they will sit two 1 1/2 hour examinations. The examination weightings are as follows:

  • Coursework - 60%
  • Theory - 40%

Throughout the two years pupils continue to develop their ICT skills using standard office applications, learning how to develop spreadsheet and database applications, and to communicate information effectively. The coursework consists of six tasks that include the creation of a web site, a PowerPoint, a database, a spreadsheet and word processed report.

Pupils who do not opt for GCSE ICT will still have the opportunity to continue to develop their skills within other subjects.

Homework

Pupils in year 11 and 12 are given homework once or twice a week. This will consist of practice GCSE questions or research relating to the coursework components.

Where possible, pupils are expected to work on their coursework at home to meet deadlines. Therefore it is useful for pupils to have a suitable computer at home with internet access but not essential. Pupils may use the ICT facilities during break and lunchtime to help to meet deadlines.

Pupils may move work between home and school using a disk or memory stick. These however must be virus checked before they are used in school. Memory sticks can be bought at most computer shops, including PC world, and a 512Mb memory stick or above will be suitable for storing ICT work. Please use the 'Contact us' link above to find out more information, placing 'memory sticks' in the subject line.
