At KS4 Technology and Design is optional. GCSE Technology is a two year course broken up into two sections.

Coursework (50%):

Evidence of candidate’s ability to communicate (10%):

Through written material conveyed in a coherent and concise manner, by annotated sketches, symbols, and formal drawings.

Evidence of the candidate ability to manufacture (50%):

By means of using the proper materials, processes and techniques in the manufacture of a product, by demonstration of an appropriately high level of finish, quality and accuracy, with the additional consideration given to the safety of users of the finished product.

Evidence of the candidate’s awareness of energy considerations in the control system of the product (20%):

The control system in terms of input, process, & output through a choice of at least three methods.

Evidence of the candidate’s ability to design is likely to include (20%):

Situation;
Design brief;
Analysis investigation & Research of the problem;
Detailed product Specification;
Possible ideas;
A rational selection of the most promising idea for development;
Development of chosen idea;
Modeling of idea for further development;
Evidence of safety considerations;
Evidence of any modifications suggested by the modeling and how they have been incorporated into the solution;
A dimensioned drawing to support manufacturing;
A record of any changes made as a result of evaluation during manufacturing;
Evidence of evaluating the product against the original design brief and the detailed specification.
