History allows pupils to build on the skills of investigation and analysis developed in the junior school.  The focus is on historical issues and developments in the 20th Century.

The syllabus is assessed by two written examinations and one piece of coursework.

Paper 1             Study in depth              2 hour exam     50%

Section A         Germany 1918 - 1941

The aim of this study is to provide pupils with an in-depth study of a European country and an understanding of how it attempted to cope with its problems between the two world wars, especially the rise to power of Hitler and the Nazi Party.  Candidates will answer two questions out of three.  Questions will be structured, requiring short answers.

Section  B   Peace, War and Neutrality - Britain, Northern Ireland, Ireland and the Second World War 1932 - 1949

The aim of this study in depth is to build on the historical basis of the conflict between Unionism and Nationalism which is studied at Key Stage 3, by looking at the relationship between Britain, Northern Ireland and Eire during and after the Second World War.  The focus is on how they reacted to the outbreak of war, how they prepared for a possible invasion and how Eire maintained neutrality.  Candidates will answer two out of three questions which will be structured, requiring short answers.

Paper 2             An Outline Study           1 hour 30 mins. exam  30%

Superpower Relations  1945 - 1985

The aim of the outline study is to enable pupils to understand the changing relationships within Europe and between the USA and Europe after the Second World War.  Candidates will answer three questions.  One question will be based on a set of documents.  One question will be extended writing (essay).

Coursework 20%

The assignment which will be completed in Year 12 will be source based and will be on a topic related to the examination course but not a part of it.
