Key Stage 3 English
In
English at all levels we follow the Specifications of C.C.E.A.
At K.S.3 each year`s work is based around the intensive
study of at least three novels, non-fiction drawn from class
texts like “Assignments 1” and “Assignments
2”and “Seekers”( all Edco), a selection
of poems including traditional ballads, regular study of
language elements, Talking and Listening activities, library
use and I.C.T. We place considerable emphasis on the importance
of reading. Each class is timetabled by the English Department
to visit the library once a week.
Assessment is by homework, oral and written, by formal Assignment-writing,
and by formal tests at the end of the Christmas and summer
terms.
We
organise a Drama Festival to run two years out of each three
year period, involving as many as possible of the pupils
in each class, both on stage and behind the scenes. Pupils
prepare posters and programmes for their plays, and write
reviews of their own or of productions of other classes.
They are encouraged to use I.C.T .in doing so. Pupils also
have access to a large folder of work created by the English
Department on English grammar, poems, novels, reading, writing
and talking and listening activities.
Exam review material is made available for pupils too, to
enable them to understand the reasons they received the
marks they did in the exam, and to encourage them to overcome
their difficulties.
Pupils
contribute to the School Magazine, writing articles, letters
to the editor, poems, stories, and accounts of their experiences
in the Drama Festival.
Pupils are also entered in poetry and story-writing competitions
run by outside bodies, as well as public-speaking and debating
competitions.
