GCSE English

At K.S.4 pupils combine the study of English with English Literature, giving them a rich experience of the novel, drama, short stories and poetry to draw on for their own writing.

Theatre visits are organised to local theatres, where appropriate. Resources on their literary texts are posted in their folders on the school computer system.

All pupils sit for this examination at either Foundation (grades available C - G) or
Higher (grades available A*- D) Tier.

Assessment is by examination and coursework:

Paper 1 (2 hours - 30%)

Section A         -           Reading:  Response to a Literary Prose Text written by an Anglo-Irish author.
Section B          -           Writing:  Review, Analyse and Comment.

Paper 2 (2 hours - 30%)

Section A         -           Writing:  Inform, Explain, Describe;
Section B         -           Reading:  Response to Non-fiction and Media.

Internally assessed Component – Coursework (40% - 2500 words)

Talking and Listening (20%) – based on candidate’s three best assessments (formal and informal situations).

Reading:  (10%)           Assignment A – Response to Poetry from other cultures;
                                                Assignment B – Shakespeare or another pre-1914 Dramatist;

Writing:  (10%)           Assignment C – Argue, Persuade, Advise;
                                                Assignment D – Explore, Imagine, Entertain.                                                                                

ENGLISH LITERATURE - CCEA

Assessment is by examination and coursework.

Paper 1 (2 hours 30 minutes – 70%)

Section A          The Study of Drama published after 1914;
Section B           The Study of Prose published after 1914;
Section C          The Study of Poetry published before 1914.
                       
Coursework (30%)

Three assignments:

Assignment A – Response to Poetry published after 1914;
Assignment B – Response to a Shakespeare Text;
Assignment C – Response to Prose published before 1914.

English and Literature are combined at KS4.
