Forty years ago, only girls took cookery classes as it was still seen as the job of the prospective wives and mothers. Cookery is a more advanced affair nowadays. Both boys and girls in St. Louis can choose to study GCSE & A - Level Home Economics (food and nutrition). It teaches pupils about nutrition and health, food choice and preparation, and the role of the consumer in modern eating patterns through a mixture of practical and written work. Students learn to plan and cook nutritious, economical meals. They also enjoy developing a range of practical skills & making food that is the envy of fellow pupils & teachers alike.
Home Economics is designed to enable pupils to acquire the knowledge, understanding and skills to make informed decisions which may improve the quality of life for themselves and others. It is an excellent preparation for various careers such as Food science, Food production, Consumer studies, Teaching, Health education, Dietician, Retail & marketing, Consumer advice, Health care & for life in general!
