GCSE Mathematics
GCSE Mathematics. is a modular course. All students will study Mathematics at Higher Level which may enable them to achieve a Grade A or Grade A*. The end of Key Stage 3 Maths results determine the Maths group of the student for GCSE. Topics studied will be number, algebra, shape, space and measures and data handling.
Assessment is divided as follows:
Modules M3 or M4 2 hr. exam (1 hour without calculator and
1 hour with calculator ) 40%
(may be taken in June in Year 11 or in January in Year 12).
Module MH 2 hr. exam (1 hour without calculator and
1 hour with calculator ) 50%
(generally taken in June in Year 12, possibly earlier for top group)
1 piece of coursework in Year 12 10%
ADDITIONAL MATHEMATICS
This course is intended to cater for those students who are capable of working beyond the limits of the existing GCSE Maths syllabus. It is designed to broaden the mathematical experience of high attaining candidates. Students attaining the highest results in KS3 Maths will be in a class where they will do Additional Maths as well as Maths for GCSE (2 subjects).
Additional Maths can provide an excellent base for any student who may be interested in continuing with Mathematics post GCSE.
Students are required to take a final exam in this subject - two written papers -
Paper 1 (2 hr. exam) will examine topics in Pure Maths. - 50% of final mark;
Paper 2 (2 hr. exam) will examine topics of Mechanics - 25% and Statistics - 25%.
