Mini World Cup at St. Louis

Mini World Cup

In the world of business, success is usually built around very simple ideas which are well developed into a profitable commodity. At St. Louis Grammar School, Kilkeel, a mini enterprise club has been in operation for a few years, encouraging students to develop their skills as future entrepreneurs, following a business related initiative through to a conclusion. This conclusion should of course involve profit.

With the World Cup just commencing in South Africa, two budding young entrepreneurs ran a Mini World Cup event for Year 9 and 10 students at the school.  Year 10 students, Paul Gilmore and Tiarnan Moore, organised a mini 4-a-side soccer league which saw 8 teams taking part in matches over the past few weeks.  The games were played during lunchtime with students organising teams and paying an entrance fee to compete in the tournament. .

After fierce competition, one team emerged victorious. The champions, ‘Spain’ (could this be an omen for the real event) consisted of Paul Doyle, Andrew Kidd, Jamie McComb and William Murnion.  The runners-up were the ‘Iraq’ team which consisted of Caolan Magee, Patrick Murray, Michael O’Reagan and Peter Curran.

Mr. Ciaran Cummins along with a number of Year 10 ‘volunteers’ officiated at the games which were played in a very sporting manner.  Other notable award recipients were Ryan Spiers for scoring the most goals and Caolan Magee for being the best goal keeper, by conceding the few goals during the tournament. .

The event proved to be a great success for the organisers. 70% of the money raised was retained by the organisers, with 30% being re-invested into the mini-enterprise to fund future projects. As this money has build up over the years, Head of Business Studies at St. Louis, Miss Mary McCullagh, along with the Mini-Enterprise Club members have decised to donate some of this money to charitable organisations.
