The recently formed Post-Primary Transfer Consortium (PPTC) has agreed to use standardised Entrance Assessment in English and Mathematics, prepared by GL Assessment. The Entrance Assessment will be used by over 34 post-primary schools in November 2009, for admission into Year 8 in September 2010. An Irish medium entrance assessment will be available. This will be at no charge to parents.

The following schools are acting together as a local consortium:

  • Abbey Christian Brothers Grammar School Newry
  • Our Lady’s Grammar School Newry
  • Sacred Heart Grammar School Newry
  • St Colman’s College Newry
  • St Louis Grammar School Kilkeel

When completing the Registration Form, please note that it is not necessary to list three Assessment Centres in SECTION 4 (Assessment Centre Location); instead, please send the completed Registration Form to:

After the close of the Registration period on the 18th September, all of the Applicants from the same Primary School will be assigned to one of the five schools listed above and they must sit the Entrance Assessment in that designated Assessment Centre.

The Centre assigned for the Entrance Assessment has no bearing upon the choice of schools for September 2010. Pupils and Parents will decide to which schools they wish to apply as at present i.e. after attending Open Nights in December / January and after the receipt of results on the 6th February 2010.

Timetable for Entrance Assessment


Mon 18th May 2009 Registration packs are available from Post Primary schools (school websites, by
post or in person).
Fri 18th September 2009 Final date for receipt of completed Registration Forms.
Sat 21st November 2009 Entrance Assessment.
Mon 30th November 2009 Deadline for receipt of requests to take the Supplementary Assessment.
Sat 12th December 2009 Supplementary Assessment.
Fri 18th December 2009 Deadline (4:00pm) for receipt of claims for Special Circumstances.
Fri 5th February 2010 Results of Entrance Assessment posted to children’s homes.
Fri 19th February 2010 Deadline for receipt of request for re-mark.
