A Level ICT

A Level ICTIn year 13 pupils may choose ICT as an option. Currently the ICT department offers a GCE in Applied ICT at AS and A2 level from OCR. This is equivalent to an ordinary AS and A Level ICT.

The GCE in Applied ICT is a vocational A level which means the work is more practically based, rather than exam based. Read more here...

Those pupils who do not opt for GCE in Applied ICT continue their ICT studies by taking the advanced CLAIT qualification for three lessons a week on a rotational basis in year 13.

GCE in Applied ICT

A Level ICTPupils have nine lessons of GCE ICT a week. The GCE helps pupils develop a broad background in information technology. Pupils who have not studied ICT at GCSE can reasonably undertake this course of study, but may need to complete extra practical exercises at the start of the course.

The three unit AS in year 13 offers an introduction to ICT which could support progression in a wide range of academic or vocational subjects.

Two of the units at AS level are portfolio based. The third unit is assessed by an examination that can be sat in January or June.

A Level ICT At A2 level there are a range of units to choose from which cover broad areas of ICT including database design, web design, multimedia, the impact of ICT on society and training ICT users.

This qualification is particularly appropriate for those wishing to progress to employment or further studies in ICT within higher education. At A2 level pupils work will be assessed through the production of portfolios.

Pupils final mark will be an average based on the grades attained in each of the six units. All units are weighted evenly.

Homework

Pupils in year 13 and 14 are given homework once or twice a week. This will consist of written work or research relating to the coursework components.

Where possible, pupils are expected to work on their coursework at home to meet deadlines. Therefore it is useful for pupils to have a suitable computer at home with internet access but not essential. Pupils may use the ICT facilities during break and lunchtime to help to meet deadlines.

Pupils may move work between home and school using a disk or memory stick. These however must be virus checked before they are used in school. Memory sticks can be bought through the school, please use the 'Contact us' link above the find out more information.
